Personality: Outwardly, the appearance of Batgirl is quite intimidating. Every inch of her skin is covered by her suit, with the mouth piece stitched on to add to the creep factor. It's not an image that screams please be my friend, but underneath that cowl there's the seldomly seen dorky teenage girl side. She sneaks into other people's apartments to steal their snacks and use up all their hot water, she watches horror movies to learn better ways to stalk and scare the bad guys, and she constantly quotes things she's heard on tv, much to the chagrin of people who expect her to be adjusting to living in a modern setting by doing something other than using examples set by reality shows. She's kind of a nerd out of the Batgirl uniform and it's something that often gets passed over in favor of having to look as scary as she does in costume.
She has her moments of insecurities, she wants to have the normal experiences she missed out on growing up. When she first meets the Nightwing and Robin, she's friendly and eager to make friends with them and curious about them. She's very sweet and determined to be a good person since finding out what her father had been training her all along to become.
After killing her first "target", Cass read his dying thoughts and immediately knew she could never do it again. She ran away and when Barbara took her in and introduced her to Bruce, it was like a new start. They didn't know about her training or her past, just accepted her strangeness and her gave her something that would quickly become incredibly important to her: they became her family.
But she still carried a lot of guilt for that first kill, to the point where the only way she knew how to cope with it was to put herself in danger for the sake of other people as often as possible and not caring if she lived or died in the process. Bruce accurately identified this behavior as her having a death wish. Her compassion and guilt kept her from forgiving herself for years, but with the help of her new family she's learned to focus on what she's doing in the present to make up for her mistakes.
Still very driven, she spent every night out in Gotham protecting the city with or without Batman. She took her job very seriously, was willing to die to protect people and even putting herself in the path of bullets because she knew her body could take it instead of letting others get hurt. This time it was less about wanting to die to pay for what she had done. Now, she was determined to see every person, innocent or not, live their life through to a natural end. If she wasn't out patrolling she was training, either alone or with Stephanie Brown, who quickly became her best friend.
She still feels a lot of shame about not being able to read, but has been shown trying to teach herself. She learned to string together basic sentences, but when Barbara called her stupid under pressure, it seemed to put a stopper to her willingness to learn. She's very insistent she isn't stupid, and she's not, but being forced to look at the fact that she's lacking such basic knowledge hurt enough to cause her to push Barbara away for months.
Cass still has a lot to learn about the opposite sex and her own sexuality in general. It wasn't until she was 18 that she had her first exposure to lust and desire and it wasn't something she enjoyed feeling at first. She dated Superboy for a short period of time and fell very hard for Black Wind, a freedom fighter who was killed before their relationship could really be explored. It wasn't until she left Bludhaven for good that she had her first makeout session and possibly more with Zero, a boy from Bludhaven who had been stalking her a little. She's still very naive when it comes to romance and tends to cycle through periods of wanting a relationship, wanting to explore her sexuality, and focusing on her work.
Once she was given full reign over Bludhaven, Cassandra really came into her own. She started exploring what it was to be Cass Cain, not just Batgirl. She made friends who had nothing to do with Bruce Wayne, even went to parties, and was excited to see herself "volving" and coming into her own. She was proud that Batman trusted her enough to find her own way.
Abilities:
Peak Human Conditioning: As a child Cass was trained every day to be perfect. She fought groups of people and could take them down without getting so much as a scratch on her, and in the time since then her abilities have only improved. She's the strongest fighter in the world in DC land, with the highest possible levels of strength, stamina, and speed that a human can have. She isn't a metahuman and has no super powers, but she's good enough that there was a whole issue devoted to making sure she WAS just human.
Martial Arts and Weapons Training: She knows every form of martial arts there is, and can learn new ones simply by watching someone else do just a few moves. Her father trained her to use every single deadly weapon and she's a master at all of them. She's also incredibly adept at stealth, able to follow people at a close enough proximity to touch them without being noticed.
Hand-to-Hand Combat: But she doesn't need a weapon to kill you. She knows every pressure point and has the strength to kill in one punch. She holds back to avoid exactly that, fighting with only a portion of her strength because killing people is something she's sworn to never do again.
Body Reading Ability: Cass can read body language to the point where all someone has to do is twitch and she knows their next attack, what their intention is, and even if they're lying or afraid. She can read people who are far faster than she is, along with non-humans and even alien lifeforms once she is given a chance to learn their body language. Because of this, even if someone is disguised she'll still know who they are if she's seen them before.
Investigation: She has some training in this, thanks to Batman and Tim Drake making sure she could handle detective work. She's competent, but it still is something she could improve on.
High Pain Tolerance: The ability to feel pain was conditioned out of her through what basically amounts to torture. She can be shot and not feel it and can continue to fight through what should be mortal injuries until exhaustion wins out or she wins. It's usually the latter.
