hellofist: (just tired)

[It's late, it's been dark for hours and she's pretty sure everyone else is sleeping, but Cass can't. It's not really a new thing, since generally crime fighters are out all night anyway, but the events of the port haven't helped much.

She's in her room when she turns the feed on, dressed in her Batgirl costume except for the cowl and gloves. She feels more like herself, dressed this way.]

What are... tips, for sleeping? Or... to do, to make tired? Don't say reading.

Is anyone else... even up?

[He said she could visit when she wanted. She even told him it might be at night and he said it was okay. That's why Cass is at Merlin's door in the middle of the night, not knocking before she just goes right in. The door was unlocked, so maybe he remembered she said she'd visit. She doesn't look around before she closes the door behind her because she's not really sneaking, so getting caught isn't exactly on her mind.

It's dark inside, which is good. It means he's sleeping instead of staying up all night doing magic things, or whatever it is Merlins do in their spare time. She makes her way to his bed, then climbs onto it to sit beside him and poke him in the shoulder.]

Hi, Merlin.

There are certain types of music that can be calming, yes.

I do.

I believe soft instrumentals might suit your situation best. I'm rather fond of the piano myself.

[ A beat. ]

What kind of magic?

[ Music is good for the soul, Cass.

As for the question, a better one would be....what can't he do, really. ]

I was trained in the use of offensive and defensive magics, as well as the healing arts.

[ Which is pretty broad, but magic itself is pretty versatile so. ]

In my latter years, I find the last two have proven more useful than the first.

[ A ghost of a smile crosses his features. ]

In some cases.

It's rare that I find myself in battle.

[ Though he can kick some ass with the best of them, if need be, he is retired for a reason. ]

[ He wouldn't have been offended even if she hadn't. He knows he's old, but it hasn't stopped him yet. ]

I have been to many places.

Some tales are always worth retelling.

I do.

[ There's a brief pause as he considers where to begin. ]

Many years ago, when I was still young, I paid a visit to a land whose king had begun to fail.

During my time there, I met his eldest, a youth both kind and fair-minded, who had no wish to assume his father's throne. His younger brother, well-spoken and clever, desired greatly to be king in his brother's stead.

It came to a head, one day, when the king named the eldest his successor. In a fit of jealousy, the younger son arranged an attack on his elder brother. The plan backfired; he was scarred over his left eye, and the elder saved the younger.

The relationship between the two was strained after that, and though they made peace with one another, a seed of bitterness was sown in the scarred brother's heart.

He did not.

[ Or at least not in any meaningful way. ]

The bitterness the scarred one harbored drove him to effectively murder his brother and drive his brother's son, the rightful heir, into exile.

It was some time before the youth returned and re-claimed what his uncle stole.

History is often filled with periods of great light, following by times of great darkness.

It is no happy tale, but things that were made wrong were eventually righted once again.
