I've got an 'abit of fancyin' dangerous blokes, an' 'e's certainly that. 'Avin' you around's liable to be a bucket of cold water on anything like that. But I'm makin' no promises all the same. I'm not very good at rememberin' reasons I shouldn't do things when I'm 'it in the gut with the reasons I want to.

Besides, 'e might not be interested. 'E looked to me like a man without a lot of interest left in anything much.

Cass knows what his reasons were. He wanted the perfect assassin, he wanted to hold the leash of a dog that could and would kill at his command, better than he could ever hope to be at it. Better than anyone else could ever be.

And she is. Shiva was the best fighter in her world, made that way because of David Cain. She can beat both of them in a fight, she has. If she ever had to, she could kill them both. David Cain's reasons are why she's alive, why she's broken in a way that can't ever be fixed.

If his plan had worked and he had gotten his way, Cass would be isolated still, unable to speak, unable to do anything except kill people and feel them die each time. Die with them every day, losing more and more of herself until she was just nothing inside. His reasons don't matter, not to Cass. They shouldn't matter at all.

But he needs a warden. Getting one will be difficult. Her lack of understanding, it doesn't carry much weight in this situation.]
