She'd recognized it as the book she had tried to read when she had stayed at Tim's apartment, but it was only the spine and the cover she knew. She still has no idea what it's about, or even what it is.]

Um. Don't know lots of things. Trying to learn. Reading, how to... use comm. But...

[Well, staring at words and trying to will them into making sense? It's not very effective.]

Need help. Had offers. Cashing in. [It's possible she got that phrase from Dean.] In library. Anyone can come, need... lots of help.

Before we start, I'd like to ask some questions about your reading level. Can you identify letters? If so, do you know their basic sounds?

Sort of. I... forget, sometimes. But know letters, can sound out, just... slow.

[She picks it up and stares for a moment, wordlessly shaping the first word with her mouth but not putting any sound to it, not quiet yet. It's an H, she knows that, she has the first part of the alphabet down better than the rest of it. and then O. P?]

Hh... [The O and P sound are said quieter, and then-] Hop?

[She looks up at him hopefully. That's right, right?]

[That one is easy. The last one looks like the first one, but with a P, so it's easy as well. Turns out rhyming books are easier to figure out than normal ones. Who knew.]

That's right. All the words in this book are very basic, so they should be easier to figure out. When you master of book of this level, we can then move to more complex books, and so on.

One lesson is hardly enough. Multiple lessons will be required, depending on your desired reading level. Assuming that's all right with you.

Sometimes you can become.... waylaid. Your goals and intentions become twisted. And by the time you arrive, you don't even recognize your goal anymore.
